Von Wessinger Retiring From First Community Bank

G. Von Wessinger is retiring as Branch Manager with First Community Bank in Chapin after 37 years of banking, with over 30 years serving the Chapin community. A drop-in reception in his honor will be held at the Chapin Branch offices on Tuesday, April 28, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Wessinger is a native VonWessingerof Chapin, a 1973 graduate of Chapin High School and a 1977 graduate of Newberry College. He went to work for Lexington State Bank in 1977, and was the manager of the Chapin Branch for Lexington State Bank when it opened in 1984.

In 2000, he went to work for First Community Bank in Chapin, formerly Newberry Federal Savings Bank. He has been very active in numerous community activities. He is a past member of the Chapin Ruritan and Chapin Sertoma clubs, and a past member and treasurer of the Chapin Eagle Club.

During his younger years, he showed an early interest in banking, working as a janitor and maintenance person at Southern Bank & Trust in Chapin. He also worked with his dad, the late George R. “Whitey” Wessinger Sr., at Chapin Furniture Store, where the Fashion Exchange is located, delivering furniture to customers in the Chapin area. He worked there during high school and college, until he started his banking career.

He married Dianne Bell Wessinger, of Columbia, and they have two children, Harrison, 26, and Callie 23, and one grandchild, Kennedy, 18 months old.

Names Chosen For Technology Park And Developments

Chuck Whipple, Lexington County Economic Development Director, says names have been chosen for a new technology park being built adjacent to the Chapin Town Limits, and for adjoining retail and residential developments. Chapin-park

The technology park adjacent to the Chapin Town Limits, and its access roads are under construction across Columbia Avenue from Chapin High School. The entire site will feature commercial retail, housing and large business sites.

Whipple said the retail site is being named The Shops at Brighton and that one parcel has been sold to Palmetto Health. Media Relations Manager Tammie Epps said the hospital often purchases land to plan for future development but that she did not have specifics on the parcel in Chapin.
